Jones leads Arizona over Cal in 3OT

Feb 6, 2011 - 7:04 AM Berkeley, CA (Sports Network) - Lamont Jones scored a career-high 27 points, including the layup that gave No. 21 Arizona the lead for good Saturday in a 107-105 triple-overtime victory over California.

Jones had every key basket for Arizona in the Pac-10 thriller including a three-point play that tied the game near the end of regulation and a tying three-pointer with 5.1 seconds left in the second overtime.

Kevin Parrom added 25 points and Derrick Williams scored 12 with 18 rebounds as the Wildcats (20-4, 9-2 Pac-10) pushed their winning streak to five games.

Williams, the team's leading scorer by almost 10 points over Jones, fouled out with 22 seconds left in regulation and Parrom said the Wildcats made a statement with their performance after that.

"It's not just Derrick Williams," he said. "We have a lot of other guys who can play."

Harper Kamp poured in a career-high 33 points to lead the Bears (13-10, 6-5), who had a four-game winning streak snapped with their first loss in more than two weeks. Allen Crabbe chipped in 27 points and Jorge Gutierrez scored 25 before fouling out in the first overtime.

Jones drove the right side and drew contact on his layup with 16 seconds left in regulation, tying the game at 76-76 and sending it to overtime after Kamp missed a one-hander in the lane at the other end.

Arizona had an 87-83 lead with under two minutes to go in the first overtime, but didn't score again in the period. Crabbe hit two free throws and then buried a spinner in the lane to tie it for Cal, while Jones missed a three from the top of the arc to force the second overtime.

It was tight until Bears big man Richard Solomon boxed out for an offensive rebound and putback to give Cal a 98-95 lead with 20 seconds left.

But Jones buried his clutch three-pointer at the other end, hitting it from the top of the arc to tie the game and force the third extra period.

The Bears had a 101-100 lead after Brandon Smith's three-pointer with under three minutes on the clock. Parrom scored at the other end to put the Wildcats ahead by one, then Cal re-claimed the lead on Kamp's bucket.

No one scored for more than a minute until Jones, handling the ball on a break with two defenders in front of him, laid the ball in with 1:03 remaining to make it 104-103.

Smith missed a layup at the other end and Parrom knocked down two free throws for a three-point Arizona lead with 21.6 seconds left. Kamp and Arizona's Kyle Fogg traded foul shots to keep the advantage at three.

With Cal's chances fading, Smith went to the line for two free throws with 1.6 seconds left (Jones fouled out on the play). He hit the first, then missed the second on purpose. But Parrom grabbed the rebound to seal the win for Arizona.

"It's a tough loss. What can you say?" Cal head coach Mike Montgomery said. "[My players] knew they had chances. They played their hearts out. They played their butts off. They were tired. The guys did everything.

"If they could just get a little smarter in terms of knowing what's on the shot clock and knowing circumstances, those kinds of things, we shut the door. We didn't do that."

The last time Cal played as many as three overtimes at home was a 107-102 win in five overtimes over Oregon on February 10, 1977 -- the longest game in program history...The Wildcats led 44-38 at halftime...Cal finished 3-1 on a four-game homestand...There were 73 free throws attempted in the game: Arizona went 23-of-31 and Cal was 30-of-42.
