Fredette helps BYU take down Air Force
Feb 10, 2011 - 6:15 AM Colorado Springs, CO (Sports Network) - Jimmer Fredette scored 25 points as No. 7 BYU ran its winning streak to three games Wednesday with an easy 90-52 win over Air Force.Jackson Emery added 17 points, Brandon Davies scored 13 and Stephen Rogers had 11 in a well-balanced attack for the Cougars (23-2, 9-1 Mountain West), who remained unbeaten since losing to New Mexico on January 29.
Tom Fow and Michael Lyons scored 11 points apiece to lead the overmatched Falcons (13-10, 4-6), who have dropped three of their last five.
"We had great performances all around," said BYU head coach Dave Rose. "Everybody was playing their 'A' game tonight."
But it was Fredette, as he has the entire season, who really sparked BYU in this one, hitting five of his eight three-point attempts and going 8-of-16 from the field overall.
The nation's leading scorer tallied the first five points in a 7-0 run to open the game. But after the Cougars allowed Air Force to draw within three points at 15-12, Rogers was the key in a 16-0 run that helped BYU take control.
He buried a trio of three-pointers during the burst, and Fredette capped it with a three of his own to make it 31-12. The Cougars went cold for a spell, letting Air Force cut its deficit to eight points before Fredette made another three-pointer for a 34-23 lead.
"The hardest thing when you play Air Force is they make you play 35 seconds of defense every possession," said Emery. "Usually they control the style of the game. I thought we did a good job in our rotation and started to run."
BYU carried a 36-25 advantage into halftime behind 46 percent shooting, including 8-of-18 from three-point range.
Evan Washington's dunk gave Air Force the first two points of the second half, but the Cougars followed with a 14-0 run. Fredette scored the last five points on a layup and three-pointer to make it 50-27 inside of 16 minutes.
The Cougars later increased their lead to 31 points when Emery drained back- to-back threes and Fredette followed with another one. Their largest lead was 40 points on a Logan Magnusson layup with 1:27 remaining.
