Johnson, Purdue crush Michigan State

Feb 28, 2011 - 5:19 AM East Lansing, MI (Sports Network) - JaJuan Johnson dominated to the tune of 20 points, 17 rebounds and seven blocks, as No. 8 Purdue earned its first regular-season sweep of Michigan State since 1997 with a 67-47 drubbing of the Spartans at the Breslin Center.

E'Twaun Moore and Lewis Jackson backed Johnson's effort with 17 and 16 points, respectively, as the Boilermakers (24-5, 13-3 Big Ten) continued their torrid stretch run with their sixth straight victory.

Jackson also dished out seven assists.

Kalin Lucas carried the Spartans with 23 points, but the club shot a woeful 33 percent from the floor to end a brief two-game winning streak.

Michigan State (16-12, 8-8) has games left against Iowa and Michigan before the start of the Big Ten Tournament, which the perennial Final Four contender will likely have to win to ensure a bid into the NCAA Tournament.

"We need to move on. But we also need to learn from getting punched in the mouth and not responding," Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said. "If I wasn't coaching against it, I would really enjoy the physical nature of Purdue's team. Purdue does a good job of walling people in, and are just a solid team, and we need to learn from them."

The Boilermakers handled Michigan State, 86-76, back on January 22 and embarrassed the preseason Big Ten favorite on its home court on Sunday.

Purdue took control midway through the first half, as Ryne Smith and Terone Johnson each hit from long range on consecutive possessions for a 19-11 lead.

JaJuan Johnson made a layup the next time down and added a three-pointer to push the margin to 29-16 with 4:44 to go in the half.

Lucas' 15 points kept the Spartans in striking distance, but the hosts still trailed 33-24 at the break.

Both teams went scoreless in the opening two-plus minutes of the season half, and Michigan State suffered through another cold streak after Draymond Green's layup cut the deficit to 38-31 five minutes in.

Purdue's subsequent 11-2 run extended the lead to 49-33 on Jackson's three- point play at the midway point, and the Boilermakers led by double digits the rest of the way.

"Well in the first half I felt we got off to a pretty good lead, then Kalin Lucas got loose a couple times," Purdue head coach Matt Painter said. "That was my fear of him getting loose and creating for himself and creating for his guys and then getting to the free-throw line...but outside of rebounding, I feel it's most important when you play Michigan State (that) you have to keep them out of transition."

Game Notes

Purdue has won at the Breslin Center in consecutive years following a nine- game skid there...The Boilermakers have won three straight on the road after a four-game losing streak away from West Lafayette...Green pulled down eight rebounds but had just seven points on 3-of-12 shooting for Michigan State.
