Pirates shock No. 15 St. John's, win by 14

Mar 4, 2011 - 4:30 AM Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Jeremy Hazell scored 31 points and Seton Hall shot the lights out to upset No. 15 St. John's, 84-70, and halt the Red Storm's winning streak at six games.

Fuquan Edwin added 19 points and Jordan Theodore scored 14 for the Pirates (12-17, 6-11 Big East), who won for just the second time in their last seven games.

Edwin was 5-for-6 from beyond the arc, Hazell went 4-for-6 and Seton Hall was 12-for-18 as a team. The Pirates shot 64 percent overall, including 68 percent in the second half.

The Red Storm, sporting their highest ranking in more than a decade, brought considerable swagger into the game after a win streak that included victories over Connecticut, Cincinnati, Marquette, Pittsburgh, DePaul and Villanova.

But they couldn't keep pace down the stretch in a game that got chippy late after head coach Steve Lavin was ejected for back-to-back technicals.

Dwight Hardy scored 23 points to lead St. John's (19-10, 11-6) and Justin Brownlee had 12.

The Red Storm went almost six minutes at the end of the game without making a field goal. Still, they were within 70-68 when Malik Boothe answered Edwin's three-pointer with a couple of foul shots at the other end.

But Seton Hall remained in control, beginning with another three-pointer from Edwin that made it 73-68. Back-to-back layups extended that lead to 77-68 and Lavin was ejected while arguing during a timeout following the second one.

Hazell made two of the four technical free throws, pushing the Seton Hall advantage to 79-68 with 1:55 remaining. The game was well out of reach after Theodore added two foul shots to make it 81-68 with just 1:22 left.

Physical at both ends, the game turned ugly for a moment when Red Storm forward Justin Burrell dragged down Seton Hall guard Anali Okoloji on a fast break.

Okoloji was well ahead of two defenders and eying an easy layup when Burrell hustled to catch him. Okoloji tumbled across the baseline and Burrell was called for an intentional foul and ejected from the game.

The Red Storm, who trailed 34-30 at halftime, suffered their first loss since falling to UCLA on February 5. They finish up the regular season with a game against South Florida on Saturday.

Seton Hall ends its season against Marquette, also on Saturday.
