Iowa deals blow to Purdue's Big Ten title hopes

Mar 6, 2011 - 12:45 AM Iowa City, IA (Sports Network) - Jarryd Cole had 16 points and 10 rebounds as Iowa dashed Purdue's lingering hopes of a Big Ten title with a 67-65 win over the sixth-ranked Boilermakers at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Matt Gatens and Bryce Cartwright each had 13 points for the Hawkeyes (11-19, 4-14 Big Ten) who halted a six-game losing streak to end the season with perhaps their signature win of the year.

Cartwright also added seven assists and six rebounds while Melsahn Basabe chipped in with 11 points and eight boards.

JaJuan Johnson scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to pace the Boilermakers (25-6, 14-4), who are still in second place in the Big Ten, but needed a win and an Ohio State loss to Wisconsin on Sunday to share the regular-season title.

Lewis Jackson and E'Twaun Moore scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, for Purdue, which had a seven game win streak snapped.

It looked as if the Boilermakers were going to run away with this one right from the start. With a 17-10 lead approaching the mid-point of the opening half, the Hawkeyes scored the next seven of nine points, making it 19-17 with 9 1/2 left. Cole's tip in and three-point play capped the momentum-changing run.

"He was phenomenal, and it was right from the beginning," Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery said of Cole. "He established how we were going to play effort wise, and at the defensive end you've got to defend this team. They're too good."

Purdue kept its lead until Cartwright nailed a jumper with 66 seconds left, giving Iowa the lead and then Johnson's jumper on the next trip made up for the 36-36 tie at the break.

In the second half, Iowa took a 44-40 lead after Gatens' fastbreak layup with 16:32 remaining. The Hawkeyes held onto a slim margin the rest of the way.

Trailing by four, 63-59, Jackson took the ball coast-to-coast after ripping down a Roy Devyn Marble missed free throw with 66 seconds left to cut it 63-61.

On the next trip, Cartwright -- who was on the bench for most of the second half with a knee injury -- hit a jumper just inside the free throw to push it back to a four-point game. Jackson, though, responded another missed Iowa free throw with another lay-in with 12 ticks left.

Gatens, who broke Purdue's full court press, then hit two free throws with 6.5 seconds left to seal the win.

Game Notes

The teams split the season series, but Purdue still owns the overall series 84-71...Purdue shot a dismal 20 percent (5-for-25) from the three-point arc...The Hawkeyes won the battle of the glass, 48-40, but had 13 turnovers.
