Creighton beats Arizona State for Las Vegas title

Nov 25, 2012 - 6:41 AM Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - Doug McDermott scored 29 points and pulled down nine rebounds, lifting the 14th-ranked Creighton Bluejays over the Arizona State Sun Devils, 87-73, in the championship game of the Las Vegas Invitational.

Ethan Wragge added 13 points for the Bluejays, who are off to a 6-0 start for the second straight year.

Jahii Carson had 30 points, seven assists and four steals to pace the Sun Devils (4-1), who were looking for their first 5-0 start since the 1985-86 season. Carrick Felix donated 17 points.

The Bluejays never looked back after starting the game on a 12-3 run. Creighton used a 10-2 run to extend its margin to 27-9 with 11:55 left.

However, Arizona State responded with an 11-0 spurt to get back in the game. Carson tallied six points during the burst that Felix capped with a layup to make it 27-20.

The Bluejays maintained their lead and took a 45-36 edge into the locker room.

Arizona State stayed within striking distance early in the second half. The Sun Devils used a small 5-0 flurry to cut the gap to 59-53 with 12:23 to play.

Creighton, though, responded with an 8-0 run to essentially put the game away.

Game Notes

The Sun Devils lead the all-time series by a count of 4-3 ... It's the first time since 1928-29 that Creighton has opened the season with six straight double-digit wins.
