Hoyas thump American for seventh straight win

Dec 22, 2012 - 9:19 PM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Otto Porter had 16 points and 13 rebounds off the bench to lead No. 15 Georgetown past American University, 65-48, at the Verizon Center.

Greg Whittington added 13 points for the Hoyas (10-1), who have won seven straight since their lone loss of the season.

"I'm happy with where we are," Georgetown coach John Thompson III said. "We all realize there are so many areas of the game that we can get better at. So am I happy with 10-1? Yes, but I do realize that we have to continue to improve."

Daniel Munoz paced the Eagles (4-8) with 15 points and Stephen Lumpkins followed with 10 for American, which has now dropped three in a row and seven of nine overall.

Georgetown controlled the game from the start, opening the first half with a 10-3 run to jump out to the early lead.

Marko Vasic put an end to the spurt with a 3-pointer, but Porter answered with a shot from beyond the arc at the other end that was followed by a Whittington three-point play to open up a double-digit lead.

American answered with an 8-4 push to close its gap to 20-14, but consecutive 3-pointers by D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera and Porter around a Lumpkins layup put the Hoyas back on top by 10 points at the midpoint of the first half.

The Eagles later cut their deficit to six points again before Whittington, Jabril Trawick and Markel Starks each connected on treys during an 11-2 run that gave Georgetown a 40-25 lead at the break.

The Hoyas carried that momentum into the second half, opening the frame with an 8-0 spurt to jump ahead, 48-25, and they maintained at least a 14-point edge from there as they cruised through the second half.

"I do think that we do bring some positives out of this game," said American coach Jeff Jones. "Hopefully nobody feels good about losing regardless of who the opponent is, but I thought we stayed with it and we played a lot of young guys, which is something that I think we will probably be doing more and more."
