FGCU's Enfield headed to USC

Apr 2, 2013 - 7:33 PM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - It didn't take long for Andy Enfield to cash in on Florida Gulf Coast's Sweet 16 run, as he was named the new head men's basketball coach at USC on Monday.

Florida Gulf Coast became the first No. 15 seed to reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament this season -- Enfield's second at the school.

After winning the Atlantic Sun Tournament, the Eagles upset second-seeded Georgetown and seventh-seed San Diego State to set a school record with 26 wins. The Cinderella run ended against Florida in the round-of-16, but not before the program captured the nation's attention with their style of play.

"Andy's success this season at Florida Gulf Coast was not a flash in the pan. He has a consistent and proven record of success for more than 15 years in college and the NBA," USC athletic director Pat Haden said. "His brand of basketball -- an up-tempo offense and a stingy defense -- is fun for players to play and fans to watch. He is an excellent fit at USC who will resonate well with our players, our fans and our community."

Enfield, 43, was previously an assistant coach at Florida State (2007-11) and with the NBA's Boston Celtics (1999-2000). He was also a shooting coach for the Milwaukee Bucks from 1995-96.

"I want to thank FGCU president Wilson Bradshaw, athletic director Ken Kavanagh and the Eagles' administration for their unwavering support of our program," Enfield said. "And I especially thank my players for their exceptional accomplishments that put FGCU on the national map. I know the program will continue to soar."
