No. 24 Memphis outlasts No. 12 Louisville

Jan 10, 2014 - 5:17 AM Louisville, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Shaq Goodwin and Joe Jackson netted 15 points apiece to help the 24th-ranked Memphis Tigers upset No. 12 Louisville, 73-67, in an AAC clash from KFC Yum! Center.

Memphis led by one with less than 40 seconds remaining in the contest when Jackson's scoop layup was swatted away by Montrezl Harrell. The referees, however, whistled Harrell for goaltending, and the basket counted for a 70-67 edge. Luke Hancock then missed a triple at the other end and Jackson split a pair at the free throw line to seal the outcome.

Goodwin's dunk with a second remaining put an exclamation point on head coach Josh Pastner's second win against a ranked foe this season. The fifth-year head coach is just 2-14 against ranked opponents in his tenure.

"We got four straight stops late in the stretch," Pastner said. "We finished the game. We got some stops defensively, so that was really important. Our guys made plays."

Geron Johnson recorded 13 points and 11 rebounds as Memphis (11-3, 2-1 AAC) snapped a four-game losing streak against the Cardinals. Jackson handed out a game-high six assists, Goodwin grabbed eight boards and Chris Crawford and Austin Nichols donated 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Luke Hancock led all scorers with 20 points off the bench for Louisville (13-3, 2-1), which lost at home for the first time this season. Russ Smith had 19 points and four steals, while Harrell tallied his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

"We didn't play really well," Louisville head coach Rick Pitino admitted. "We turned it over at crucial times, got into low defense, gave up the 3 and missed free throws, but we have to give them credit. They outplayed us."

Memphis led 30-25 with five minutes remaining in the first half. The lone bright spot offensively for Louisville was Hancock, who had 12 on 5-of-6 from the floor while the rest of the Cardinals were shooting just 5-of-19.

The Tigers made 10-of-17 to close out the first half, scored 12-of-15 field goals in the paint and carried a 36-33 edge into the break.

Before the first media timeout of the second half, Smith followed his runner in the paint with a reverse layup in transition to knot the score at 39 apiece.

The lead changed hands five times over the next 10 minutes. Smith potted two treys and a free throw around a pair of Nichols jams to put the Cardinals up 54-52 with 8:18 on the clock.

Hancock extended the lead with a few free throws and Chris Jones and Harrell made jumpers to keep Memphis at arm's length.

Goodwin and Johnson silenced the crowd with consecutive slam dunks, the second of which included a foul and free throw to re-tie the score at 64-all with 3:13 left.

Harrell's layup gave Louisville its final lead 2:12 before the final buzzer. Johnson drew a foul on Hancock and made a pair of foul shots for a 68-67 margin before Jackson's layup led to the final sequence.

Memphis beat Louisville for the first time since Feb. 9, 2002 ... Louisville still holds a 53-35 all-time edge in the series, and 9-4 lead when both teams are ranked ...
