Oklahoma sends No. 9 ISU to first loss
Jan 12, 2014 - 5:48 AM Norman, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Spangler converted a go-ahead, three- point play with just over two minutes left, sparking an Oklahoma surge that helped the Sooners hand No. 9 Iowa State its first loss of the season with an 87-82 decision on Saturday at Lloyd Noble Center.Melvin Ejim capped a 7-0 Iowa State sprint with a 3-pointer that put the Cyclones on top, 77-76, with 2:41 to play, but Spangler answered with a three- point play at the other end to put the Sooners in front for good.
After Ejim missed a triple on ISU's next trip, Buddy Hield finished a layup and the Cyclones went scoreless over their next four possessions, allowing the Sooners to seal the outcome by going 6-of-8 from the free throw line down the stretch.
Hield hit six 3-pointers en route to a team-high 22 points, while Spangler supplied 16 points and 15 rebounds for the Sooners (13-3, 2-1 Big 12), who bounced back from a 90-83 setback against Kansas their last time out.
"We needed this one," Hield said. "This win was a must win for us. We had to come out and execute our game plan. We just had to find a way to win the game at the end and we did that."
DeAndre Kane contributed a game-high 23 points to go with nine boards and four assists, but committed seven of the Cyclones' 13 turnovers in the setback.
"He's getting evaluated right now," Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg said of Kane, who sustained an ankle injury late in the setback. "He just got a picture taken of it. So we'll see. It looked like he was making a play to the basket and I'm assuming that he stepped on one of their player's feet."
Iowa State (14-1, 2-1) had won a program-record 14 straight games.
The Cyclones led 41-39 after Kane opened the second half with a jumper, but Hield drilled a trio of treys during a 20-5 Sooners spurt that Isaiah Cousins capped with a triple for a 59-46 lead with 13:50 to play.
With the margin at 13 just over a minute later, Ejim finished back-to-back layups, sparking a 15-5 ISU run that brought the Cyclones within 66-63 with just under eight minutes remaining.
With the difference at six, 76-70, with 4:13 remaining, Ejim fueled ISU's 7-0 sprint that gave the Cyclones their first lead since early in the second half, but OU answered with a decisive 11-0 surge to run away with the contest.
Oklahoma led for much of the first half and held a 39-31 cushion with 2:36 left in the opening frame, but the Cyclones closed the stanza on an 8-0 surge behind six points from Georges Niang to tie the tilt heading into halftime.
Game Notes
Ejim finished with 21 points and six rebounds, while Niang added 14 points ... Oklahoma shot 13-of-30 from 3-point range, compared to just 6-of-26 shooting from distance for the Cyclones ... Cousins scored 17 points for OU ... Iowa State scored 52 points in the paint, while Oklahoma scored 24.
