Baylor eases past TCU in Big 12 clash

Jan 12, 2014 - 6:09 AM Waco, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Taurean Prince totaled a career-high 23 points as No. 7 Baylor pasted TCU, 88-62, at Ferrell Center.

Brady Heslip had 15 points, Isaiah Austin totaled 14, and Cory Jefferson netted 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for the Bears (13-2, 1-1 Big 12), who bounced back from a 15-point loss to Iowa State on Tuesday.

"I think anytime you start Big 12 play you have got to be focused. If not, then you are not going to be successful," said Baylor coach Scott Drew. "Especially coming off a loss, we just wanted to make sure that we got back to playing Baylor basketball."

Brandon Parrish picked up 16 points with six rebounds for the Horned Frogs (9-6, 1-2), who have dropped three in a row for the first time all season. Kyan Anderson contributed 12 with seven assists in a losing effort.

Jarvis Ray's three-pointer just after the five-minute mark of the contest gave TCU an 11-9 edge, its last in the contest. A quick burst thereafter, ending just shy of the midway point of the first half found Baylor ahead 20-14, thanks to an Austin tip-in.

Prince's layup made it 34-18 for the hosts with 4:49 left before intermission, capping a 9-2 spurt, and Baylor kept the pressure on until the buzzer, going up 51-25 at the break on a Rico Gathers lay-in.

"I think they started to just beat us physically. They started pounding and pounding and we started to back up. We didn't continue to fight back like we did during those first few minutes. I guess that's what put them over the top of us," said Parrish.

Austin's jumper provided a 30-point margin for the Bears early in the second half, and the hosts' advantage stayed above 20 points until a Ray bucket with 12:33 remaining pulled TCU within 62-44.

The visitors once again reduced their deficit below 20 points, on Karviar Shepherd's 3-point play making it 65-47 with 11:21 to play, but Ish Wainwright's jumper was the first of nine straight points from there.

Jefferson's basket opened up a 74-47 edge with 7:04 on the clock, and the lead swelled to 78-49 on another Prince bucket just over a minute later.

Baylor cruised home, only allowing the Horned Frogs to pull as close as 22.
