Hield helps Sooners sneak past Bears
Jan 19, 2014 - 12:15 AM Waco, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Buddy Hield scored a game-high 19 points to help 25th-ranked Oklahoma end No. 12 Baylor's 13-game home winning streak with a 66-64 decision from Ferrell Center.Cameron Clark added 14 points for Oklahoma (14-4, 3-2 Big-12), which has traded wins and losses over its last seven games. Jordan Woodard contributed 10 points and eight assists.
Kenny Chery paced Baylor (13-4, 1-3) in a losing effort with 16 points. Isaiah Austin and Cory Jefferson donated 12 and 11 points, respectively, as the Bears lost their first game this season decided by five points or fewer.
"I thought the atmosphere was tremendous," said Baylor coach Scott Drew. "I know our team feels terrible that we couldn't win at the end."
Oklahoma struggled to find the range out of the gate, missing 11 of its first 12 shots. Baylor meanwhile opened up just 1-of-7 but Brady Heslip and Chery sank consecutive 3-pointers to open up a 9-4 lead 6 1/2 minutes in.
Baylor's lead hovered between four and eight the rest of the first half. The Sooners shot just 7-of-30 from the floor and missed their final two looks late as the hosts led 30-24 at intermission.
Jefferson's dunk to start the second half had the Bears up by eight, but the Sooners made the necessary adjustments to attack Baylor's zone at halftime. Hield, Isaiah Cousins and Clark canned three straight 3-pointers to cap a 16-0 OU run early in the frame.
Clark's corner 3 made it 40-32, but Jefferson's putback capped a 14-5 Baylor surge to pull the Bears back in front.
Hield's triple tied it at 51-apiece with 6:40 to play and the two teams traded baskets until Clark and Woodard followed another Hield trey with short jumpers for a 62-57 OU margin.
"I have always been confident in shooting," said Hield. "My teammates always encourage me to make shots. Fortunately, every second half I probably get a little spurt going on. It is all thanks to my teammates finding me in the open spots to give me the confidence to make shots."
It was 63-58 with 44 seconds left when Baylor won possession after a video review. Royce O'Neale attacked the basket on the inbounds and earned a trip to the free throw line, but missed both of his attempts. Woodard sank a pair at the other end for a seven point margin, but Austin made things interesting after drilling back-to-back 3s from the top of the key around a Woodard missed free throw.
Woodard went back to the line with a 65-64 lead and 9.1 ticks on the clock. He was way off with his first try, but the second one was pure for a two-point lead.
On the final possession, O'Neale took a hand-off but had the ball knocked loose as the seconds trickled down. O'Neale gathered it and knocked down a jumper from the left wing, but the clock had expired on Baylor.
