No. 9 Wisonsin takes down Purdue

Jan 26, 2014 - 1:30 AM West Lafayette, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Frank Kaminsky scored 16 points to lead every Wisconsin starter in double figures as the No. 9 Badgers defeated Purdue, 72-58, on Saturday afternoon.

Traevon Jackson and Sam Dekker each scored 15 points, Ben Brust tallied 11 points, and Josh Gasser added 10 for Wisconsin (17-3, 4-3 Big Ten), which snapped a three-game losing streak.

Terone Johnson and Bryson Scott each scored 10 points to lead the Boilermakers (13-7, 3-4), who have lost two straight on the heels of a three-game conference winning streak.

Gasser hit two 3-pointers to help Wisconsin storm out of the gate to a 17-6 lead. From there, the Badgers went cold and Purdue used a 13-3 run over the next nine minutes to cut the deficit to one, 20-19.

Purdue tied the game a couple of times in the closing minutes of the first half, but Gasser and Dekker combined to go 5-of-6 from the free-throw line in the final 1 1/2 minutes to help the visitors to a 32-29 lead at the break.

Much like the first half, Wisconsin opened up the second frame on a run. Brust followed a Dekker layup with a three and the two combined to go on a 9-2 run in the opening three minutes to stake the Badgers to a 41-31 advantage.

Kendall Stephens then made two treys around a Ronnie Johnson layup as Purdue trimmed the deficit to 42-39 with 15:29 remaining.

That is as close as the hosts would get with Kaminsky and Brust making layups around a Bronson Koenig triple to push the lead back to double digits.
