Duke holds off Maryland
Feb 16, 2014 - 5:14 AM Durham, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Jabari Parker scored 23 points and put in the go-ahead dunk with 1:17 remaining, as No. 8 Duke held off Maryland, 69-67, in the final regular season ACC matchup between the schools.Rodney Hood and Rasheed Sulaimon each posted 11 points for the Blue Devils (20-5, 9-3 ACC), who have won three straight. Amile Jefferson gave seven points and 12 rebounds.
"It was a gutty game for both teams," said Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski. "The one consistent factor throughout was that both teams played really hard. They played to win and we played to win. That?s what made it a great basketball game."
Jake Layman had 18 points and six rebounds, Dez Wells gave 17 points and six boards, while Charles Mitchell had 12 points and six rebounds for the Terrapins (14-12, 6-7), who have dropped three of their last four. Maryland will move to the Big Ten next season.
An offensive rebound from Jefferson at the Duke end following a miss was reviewed by the officials, and it was determined the ball never hit the rim, giving Maryland the ball back with 20.9 seconds left due to a shot clock violation.
Trailing by a point, the team went down the court and Charles Mitchell attempted a shot, but it was blocked out of bounds by Parker with 6.4 seconds left.
Mitchell again wound up with the ball and a chance to win the game for Maryland. Driving to the net, he floated up a layup with his right hand that hit the back of the glass, then the front of the rim twice before falling into the hands of Jefferson, who was fouled with 1.1 seconds to go.
After making his first shot, he missed the second and Wells' desperation heave never had a chance.
"We really executed, and even the shots we didn't make at the end in the last two possessions, I thought we got what we really wanted, and executed well," said Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon. "That's all you can ask as a coach."
Duke had built a 10-point lead as Sulaimon's two free throws with 8 1/2 minutes to play in the first half gave the team a 24-14 lead.
Maryland later used a 7-0 run to get within one, but the Blue Devils answered with their own 7-0 run and eventually took a 39-33 lead into the break.
A pair of free throws from Parker 7 1/2 minutes into the second half saw the Blue Devils holding a 51-42 advantage, but the Terrapins answered with a 12-1 run as Well's layup gave the team their first lead of the game at 54-52 with 8 1/2 minutes left.
A Wells 3-pointer gave Maryland a 67-64 lead with under three minutes to play, but Hood hit two free throws and Jefferson stole the ball from Wells, leading to a convincing slam from Parker for a 68-67 lead with 1:19 to play.
