No. 13 Cardinals crush Scarlet Knights
Feb 17, 2014 - 5:41 AM Louisville, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Luke Hancock scored a personal-best 25 points on just nine shots as No. 13 Louisville rolled to a 102-54 drubbing of Rutgers on Sunday from KFC Yum! Center.Hancock shot 7-of-9 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the arc for the Cardinals (21-4, 10-2 AAC), who led wire-to-wire en route to their fourth straight triumph. Terry Rozier had 16 points and Wayne Blackshear scored 10, both in a reserve role.
"We played really well tonight. Any time you shoot the basketball like that, everything is going to pick up," Cardinals head coach
Myles Mack and Kadeem Jack netted 10 points apiece in the setback. Rutgers (10-16, 4-9) has lost two in a row and seven of nine overall.
"I told our team going in its not so much about us defending them it's how we handle all that multiple action defensively. And we just didn't do that well enough," Rutgers head coach Eddie Jordan said.
The 2013 National Champs stumbled early in conference play with home losses to Memphis and Cincinnati, but have found their groove as of late, winning eight of nine.
Russ Smith and Hancock hit triples to open the scoring and Rozier canned a trey five minutes in for a 15-5 Louisville edge.
Rozier hit three more from the arc in the period, while the Cardinals' defense clamped down and held Rutgers to just 24 points on 32.3 percent shooting in the first half.
Stephan Van Treese's tip-in less than a minute before halftime gave Louisville a 19-point halftime margin, and it only got worse as the game went on.
Smith's jumper two minutes into the second half ignited a 21-0 surge, which Blackshear capped with his triple at 13:18. Louisville led 69-27 at that point and coasted the rest of the way.
