Robinson's jumper at the buzzer lifts No. 16 Michigan over Purdue
Feb 27, 2014 - 4:33 AM West Lafayette, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Glenn Robinson III banked home a baseline runner to beat the buzzer and lift No. 16 Michigan to a 77-76 overtime triumph over Purdue in a Big Ten bout on Wednesday. After Ronnie Johnson put Purdue on top by a point with just over 30 seconds to play and Michigan came up empty at the other end, Kendall Stephens missed the front end of a 1-and-1, leaving the door open. The Wolverines took a timeout with 2.9 seconds left, and the ensuing inbounds lob went to Robinson in the far corner. The sophomore corralled the heave, sidestepped a defender and unleashed the game-winner as the buzzer sounded.
"He (the defender) kind of overran it and I took one dribble and just laid it in," Robinson said of the final play. "The ball was rolling around on the rim. I was just praying that it went down."
Robinson poured in team-high 17 points for the Wolverines (20-7, 12-3 Big Ten), who have won three of four and control their own destiny atop the Big Ten standings.
Nik Stauskas netted 15 points, Caris LeVert donated 14 and Jordan Morgan had 13 points with 10 rebounds in a balanced scoring attack for the Maize & Blue.
Terone Johnson and brother Ronnie went for 24 and 21 points, respectively, in Purdue's (15-13, 5-10) third straight setback.
Stauskas checked out of the game after taking a fall and injuring his right arm on Michigan's opening possession. Purdue took advantage, jumping out to a 7-0 edge.
The onslaught continued even after Stauskas checked back in. Michigan's leading scorer missed his first four shots from the floor and the Boilermakers capitalized, extending their lead to 27-8 midway through the frame. Purdue opened 5-of-7 from the arc, with Terone Johnson accounting for 16 points.
LeVert's turn-around jumper in the lane sparked Michigan's offense, which rattled off 11 of 13 point to pull back within 10 points, but Purdue closed the half strong. Ronnie Johnson's jumper in the final seconds pushed the margin to 37-24 at the break.
"I thought he had a really good game," Purdue head coach Matt Painter said of Ronnie Johnson. "I thought he did some good things for us, broke down the defense. He knocked down that pullup at the end of the first half that was a big shot."
Zak Irvin netted five straight during a 9-0 Wolverines surge midway through the second frame to cut Purdue's lead to 47-45. The deficit was just a point after Stauskas split a pair of free throws before the hosts regrouped.
A.J. Hammons followed Ronnie Johnson's layup with a three-point play at 8:14, and Purdue held the lead until Robinson's free throws at 1:55 knotted it at 63-apiece.
Stauskas' 3-ball was off the mark at the end of regulation.
