Sheehey nets 30 as IU sends Iowa to third straight loss
Feb 28, 2014 - 6:19 AM Bloomington, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Will Sheehey netted a career-best 30 points and Indiana took down No. 20 Iowa, 93-86, in a Big Ten bout on Thursday from Assembly Hall.Stanford Robinson and Evan Gordon had 17 and 12 points, respectively, in reserve roles for Indiana (16-12, 6-9 Big Ten), while the four non-Sheehey starters combined for just 21 points on six made field goals.
"We beat a really good team tonight, no doubt about that," Indiana head coach Tom Crean remarked. "Great respect for Iowa. Really proud of our players and the way they kept taking punches and responding to it."
This was the lone meeting between the two teams this season after the Hoosiers swept both matchups a season ago.
Roy Devyn Marble paced Iowa (19-9, 8-7) with 20 points, Aaron White had 19 with 10 points and Melsahn Basabe scored 14 in the Hawkeyes' third straight setback.
"Defense wasn't great," Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery admitted. "You can't go on the road and turn it over 18 times and expect to win."
Iowa made its first five shots from the field, jumping out to a 10-2 edge less than two minutes in. Josh Oglesby's triple just before the first media timeout made it 17-10.
A Sheehey jam out of the break sparked a 13-6 Indiana flurry, with Yogi Ferrell hitting a pair of 3-pointers on the back end to knot the score at 23- apiece.
Indiana eventually went up by eight late in the period after Jeremy Holloway's jumper, but the Hawkeyes closed the half about as well as they could, holding the Hoosiers to just six points the rest of the way while scoring 16. Iowa led 52-49 at the break.
The Hoosiers chipped away at their deficit over the initial 10 minutes of the second half, claiming a 67-66 lead after Devin Davis' offensive rebound and three-point play. The margin held, with Robinson's layup plus a foul extending it to 77-69 with 6 1/2 minutes remaining.
Iowa never got closer than five the rest of the way.
