Florida A&M fires hoops coach Gillespie

Aug 14, 2007 - 8:03 PM TALLAHASSEE, Florida (Ticker) -- Mike Gillespie Sr. was fired Tuesday as Florida A&M's basketball coach, the school confirmed on Tuesday.

The 56-year-old Gillespie, who was charged with misdemeanor stalking three months ago, had been on paid leave since May 30, a report on the Tallahassee Democrat's web site stated. It came five days after he had been arrested and charged with harassing an unidentified woman.

According to the report, the school sent a fax to Tim Jansen, Gillespie's attorney, early Tuesday morning informing the coach that he has been dismissed.

Gillespie had one year remaining on a five-year contract, the report stated.

In six seasons with the Rattlers, Gillespie compiled a 80-94 record, including a pair of appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2004 and 2007.
