No. 2 Wisconsin stifles Marquette
Dec 6, 2014 - 8:33 PM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Frank Kaminsky scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, leading second-ranked Wisconsin to a 49-38 victory over Marquette on Saturday at the Bradley Center.Josh Gasser hit four 3-pointers and added 12 points for the Badgers (8-1), who bounced back from an 80-70 home loss to fourth-ranked Duke on Wednesday. Wisconsin beat its state rival for the second straight year and won for the fourth time in the last six meetings.
"I don't care if we win 1-0, as long as we beat Marquette," said Gasser about the rivalry.
Matt Carlino provided most of the offense for Marquette (4-4) with 18 points. The Eagles shot just 28.9 percent and fell to 0-3 against ranked opposition this season. Marquette also lost to Ohio State and Michigan State last month.
Carlino drilled a 3-pointer to start the game for the Eagles, who made three of their first five shots before missing their next seven attempts. Wisconsin took advantage of the Marquette drought and opened a 17-7 lead.
Another three from Carlino, a free throw from Derrick Wilson and a bucket by Carlino allowed with Eagles to pull within four, but the Badgers again pulled away with an 8-0 burst. Gasser hit a pair from beyond the arc and Kaminsky sank two from the stripe for a 25-13 Wisconsin advantage.
Steve Taylor's layup accounted for the last two points of the first half to pull Marquette within 10 and the Eagles scored the first seven points after the intermission to make it a 25-22 game.
Gasser, though, stemmed the momentum with another triple to start a 7-1 run, as Wisconsin opened a 32-23 cushion with 13 1/2 minutes to play. Sandy Cohen III canned a three and added a pair of free throws a few minutes later, as Marquette closed to within 35-33 with nine minutes left.
Once again it was Gasser to the rescue for Wisconsin. His 3-pointer started a run of nine straight Wisconsin points, giving the Badgers a 44-33 lead with just under four minutes remaining and Marquette got only as close as six.
Carlino's free throws with 2:05 to play made it 44-38, but Kaminsky's trey with 50 seconds left ended Marquette's comeback hopes.
"Shots weren't falling today, but we picked up our game in other ways," noted Kaminsky.
