Wichita State rallies past Alabama, sets home win streak mark

Dec 17, 2014 - 4:40 AM Wichita, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Fred VanVleet fed Darius Carter for the game-deciding dunk with 11.9 seconds remaining as No. 11 Wichita State survived Alabama, 53-52, on Tuesday.

The Crimson Tide led by 11 with under five minutes to play before a furious comeback pulled the Shockers even. Rashard Kelly scored the final four points of an 11-0 run, the last two coming off a steal with 1:20 remaining

The Shockers (8-1) came up empty on their next possession after forcing another turnover, then fouled Levi Randolph with 32.1 seconds left.

Randolph, a 90-percent free throw shooter coming in, made the first attempt and missed the second.

On Wichita State's final possession, VanVleet drove the lane, drew Michael Kessens away from the basket and bounced a backdoor pass to an open Carter for the go-ahead flush.

Randolph lost control on a drive to the basket with time winding down and was forced to call a timeout with 1.2 seconds to go.

Rodney Cooper's rushed 3-point try missed everything at the buzzer as Wichita State hung on for a school-record 23rd straight home win.

Carter and Ron Baker led the Shockers with 16 and 14 points, respectively, while Randolph and Shannon Hale each netted 13 points for the Tide.

The Tide (6-3) scored the final six points of a tight first half, took a 25-24 lead into the break and stayed in front until the final sequence.

Their largest lead, 51-40, came on Hale's 3-pointer with 6:01 to go.

Carter began the game-changing 11-0 run with a dunk, VanFleet scored inside and Baker converted a three-point play prior to Kelly's two buckets.
