Xavier tops No. 25 Georgetown in Big East opener

Jan 1, 2015 - 5:29 AM Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Jalen Reynolds finished with 17 points and four rebounds as Xavier opened Big East play with a 70-53 victory over No. 25 Georgetown on Wednesday.

Remy Abell and Dee Davis each scored 12 points and James Farr chipped in nine points, 10 rebounds and three blocks for the Musketeers (10-3, 1-0 Big East), who improved to 8-0 at home this season.

D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera had a game-high 18 points and Joshua Smith supplied 10 points and four boards for the Hoyas (8-4, 0-1), who had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Xavier jumped out to an early lead as Myles Davis' 3-pointer made it a 16-7 game less than eight minutes into the contest. Abell's trey and Farr's dunk increased the Musketeers' advantage to 11 points past the midway point of the opening half.

The Hoyas responded with a 10-2 spurt that was capped on Aaron Bowen's layup, whittling the deficit to 23-20 with 4:44 to play, but the Musketeers took a 31-25 lead into halftime.

Smith-Rivera's jumper ended an early 6-0 run to get the Hoyas within 32-31 less than three minutes into the final stanza, but Matt Stainbrook scored four points in an 8-0 swing to restore Xavier's 10-point cushion with 10:36 to play.

The Musketeers' lead swelled to 17 points down the stretch.
