No. 3 UVA still undefeated with 2OT win against 'Canes

Jan 4, 2015 - 2:10 AM Coral Gables, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - It took 10 extra minutes, but No. 3 Virginia narrowly escaped with an 89-80 double-overtime win over Miami-Florida to remain undefeated.

The Cavaliers (13-0, 1-0 ACC) were led by London Perrantes with 26 points and eight assists. Justin Anderson added nine of his 16 points in the overtime periods, including a clutch 3-pointer.

Angel Rodriguez scored a career-high 25 points for the Hurricanes (10-4, 0-1), to go with seven assists and four rebounds. His three free throws with less than a second remaining in regulation forced overtime.

Sheldon McClellan chipped in 16 points and eight boards for Miami, and Omar Sherman added 13 on 5-of-10 shooting with six rebounds.

Trailing by as much as 19, the Hurricanes gradually chipped away at the Cavs' big lead.

Rodriguez scored eight straight points for the Hurricanes to cut Virginia's lead to 57-56 with 1:31 left, and Perrantes responded with a triple for the Cavaliers to go back up by four.

Deandre Burnett's layup with six seconds left once again cut Miami's deficit to one possession at 63-60, and Evan Nolte just had to hit a free throw to essentially put the game out of reach. However, he missed both attempts.

Rodriguez's tying 3-pointer from the top of the key missed, but he was fouled by Anderson and got an opportunity to tie the game at the line. Rodriguez hit all three free throws to send the game to overtime.

In OT, Miami took its first lead of the game since it was 4-1 early in the contest. Up by four with 20 seconds left, the Hurricanes replicated UVA's mistake and fouled Anderson shooting a 3. Like Rodriguez, Anderson hit all three free throws.

After a pair of Rodriguez free throws extended Miami's lead back to three, Anderson came up big again with a 3-pointer to tie the game with 15 seconds left. The Hurricanes did not get a shot off at the buzzer.

McClellan's 3-pointer staked the hosts to a three-point lead on the first possession of the second overtime, but they did not hit another shot from the floor for over four minutes.

The Cavs went on an 8-0 run to gain some breathing room. Perrantes hit four free throws in the spurt and hit nine total in the second overtime to put the game away. Burnett's layup with seven seconds left ended Miami's drought, but it did not get any closer than seven.

Virginia hit its first five attempts from 3-point range and took a 38-20 into halftime after Darion Atkins hit a jumper with 49 seconds to go.

The Hurricanes shot just 9-of-25 in the first half and did not attempt a free throw.

After the break, Miami was able to break through Virginia's stingy defense. Back-to-back triples from Sherman and Burnett started an 8-0 Hurricanes run that cut their deficit to single digits with 16:14 to go.

Just four minutes later, Sherman's 3-pointer started another 8-0 Miami burst to pull within two points. He hit another triple in two minutes, and McClellan hit the Hurricanes' first two free throw attempts of the game to cap the run.

Minutes later, Rodriguez started the run that brought the Hurricanes within one point.
