Oklahoma State hands Texas another loss

Jan 11, 2015 - 2:40 AM Stillwater, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - Le'Bryan Nash and Phil Forte III carried Oklahoma State's offense and the rest of the Cowboys complemented that with a lockdown defensive effort in their 69-58 win over No. 10 Texas on Saturday.

Nash and Forte both scored 20 points for the Cowboys (12-3, 2-1 Big 12), who were coming off a hard-fought loss at Iowa State on Tuesday.

They recovered by making nine 3-pointers and limiting Texas to 34.4 percent shooting. Anthony Hickey Jr. did his part with 10 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

"Anthony's stat line is incredible. He does a lot of tangible things for our basketball team, but he almost had a triple-double," Oklahoma State head coach Travis Ford said. "The seven assists and one turnover are what I really love."

Myles Turner paced Texas (12-4, 1-2) with 18 points off the bench, while Demarcus Holland and Isaiah Taylor contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Jonathan Holmes missed all 10 of his shots and was held scoreless as the Longhorns dropped their second straight.

They were five days removed from dropping a home game against No. 16 Oklahoma, a setback that saw them score just 49 points on 30 percent shooting.

Saturday produced similar results.

"You go back to the game Monday night, We just didn't give ourselves a chance because of the energy level, but today I thought that part was there," Texas head coach Rick Barnes said. "Execution is what we've got to get right."

It was no more than a two-possession game during a first half that featured six ties and five lead changes.

The difference came in the second half when Oklahoma State made six of its 3- pointers, two coming from Forte after the score was even at 39-39 about seven minutes in.

The Cowboys never trailed again and went ahead 58-50 after Tavarius Shine hit from the perimeter with just over four minutes to play.

Forte added another one the next time down, sank a tough stepback jumper from the top of the key and stole an inbounds pass all in a two-minute span to keep the hosts comfortably ahead the rest of the way.
