Baylor takes out Texas in Big 12 clash

Feb 1, 2015 - 5:17 AM Waco, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Kenny Chery totaled 23 points thanks to a 5- of-7 performance from long range, and Royce O'Neale added 20 with eight rebounds as No. 20 Baylor topped 19th-ranked Texas, 83-60, at the Ferrell Center.

Taurean Price and Johnathan Motley each contributed 13 points for the Bears (16-5, 4-4 Big 12), while Rico Gathers clocked in with eight points and 15 boards as the Bears won for the third time in their last four.

"You can't get much more unselfish play than 24 assists and only nine turnovers. It was excellent offensive execution with guys making the extra pass," said Baylor head coach Scott Drew. "We knew we had to get a good shot on our first [attempt] because you've got two monster teams on the glass. If you were depending on a lot of second or third chance points, it was going to be tough."

Jonathan Holmes had 17 points for the Longhorns (14-7, 3-5), who received 16 points and 10 assists from Isaiah Taylor in a losing effort.

Texas used an 11-4 run late in the first half, clawing back to 28-24 after a triple from Javan Felix with 4:19 left, but that was the closest the Longhorns came for the remainder of the contest.

Prince's triple extended the edge to 35-24 inside two minutes to go and Motley's bucket made it 39-27 at the break.

Chery hit a pair of triples around a Cameron Ridley dunk and the hosts' edge reached 16, 45-29, less than two minutes into the second half and the Bears maintained a healthy margin throughout.

The lead hit 74-53 for Baylor inside of five minutes left in the contest after another Prince make from long distance. The largest edge in the game occurred with 1:26 to play on an O'Neale layup which made it 83-57.

"I know that two games in a row we have dug a hole and when I look at it they came out and made some shots, and we missed some shots," Texas head coach Rick Barnes said. "It goes back to where offensively when we don't capitalize there, I think it spills back into what we are doing defensively. We just can't let that happen."

Baylor was in control from the outset, scoring the game's first 12 points and going up 21-9 on a pair of Motley free throws just over seven minutes in.

Baylor shot 54.8 percent (17-of-31) in the second half and made 12-of-22 shots from beyond the arc overall ... Texas made just one of three free throws, while the Bears converted 11-of-20 from the line ... The Longhorns, who outscored their hosts 42-28 in the paint, have dropped three straight and five of seven ... Baylor posted its largest win over Texas since a 24-point (84-60) result on March 5, 1988, in Waco.
