No. 11 Iowa State stifles Texas Tech

Feb 8, 2015 - 12:38 AM Ames, IA (SportsNetwork.com) - In his first career start, Jameel McKay led No. 11 Iowa State to a 75-38 win over Texas Tech on Saturday.

McKay led the Cyclones (17-5, 7-3 Big 12) with 17 points on 7-of-7 shooting. He finished with eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals.

Naz Long complemented McKay with 15 points.

Texas Tech (12-12, 2-9) could not replicate its Jan. 24 win over the Cyclones. Toddrick Gotcher paced the Red Raiders with 11 points off the bench.

"Having lost a big one down there, we took this personal," said Long. "We were taking a lot of hits defensively, so we took it upon ourselves to keep our man in front of us and run guys off the 3-point line."

While known for its offense, it was Iowa State's defense that created significant breathing room early in the game. Texas Tech made just two of its first 13 attempts as Iowa State jumped out to a 19-4 lead in the first 10-plus minutes.

The Red Raiders never could solve the Cyclones' defense in any aspect of the game. They shot 30.9 percent, made just 4-of-20 from 3-point range, went 0- of-7 at the foul line and committed 15 turnovers.

"We just couldn't seem to buy a basket," said Texas Tech coach Tubby Smith. "It was one of those days."

McKay wasted no time making a difference for the Cyclones. He had seven points and two blocks in the first half, including finishing an alley-oop from Georges Niang early in the game to start a 9-0 Iowa State run.

The Red Raiders' offense settled in at the end of the half, but they still trailed 35-17 at the break. They shot just 29.2 percent and committed 11 turnovers.

Early in the second half, Texas Tech continued to net points, but it could not get enough stops to get back in the game. McKay's three-point play started an 8-0 Cyclones lead to extend their advantage to 56-27.

Norense Odiase answered with a layup at the other end, but Texas Tech would not score again for eight minutes. When Keenan Evans ended the drought with less than four minutes to play, Iowa State led 72-31 and continued to control the remainder of the game.

Game Notes

Iowa State improved to 15-12 in the all-time series after the season-series split ... Texas Tech is 0-9 away from home this season ... The Cyclones won their 20th-straight game at home ... Niang scored just seven points, ending a streak of 10-straight games with double figures ... Iowa State is back on the court Monday at Oklahoma while Texas Tech hosts Kansas on Tuesday.
