No. 2 Virginia hangs on to beat NC State

Feb 12, 2015 - 4:09 AM Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Malcolm Brogdon scored 15 points, Mike Tobey had 11 and No. 2 Virginia held on to beat North Carolina State 51-47 Wednesday night.

Virginia pulled through despite playing without guard Justin Anderson, who will miss 4-6 weeks after suffering a fractured finger on his left hand in Saturday's win over Louisville.

The Cavaliers (22-1, 10-1 ACC) have won three in a row since falling to Duke on Jan. 31.

Trevor Lacey scored 14 points to lead the Wolfpack (14-11, 5-7) but missed a layup that could have tied the score in the last 10 seconds.

It came after Brogdon missed a scoop shot at the other end and Lacey dribbled the length of the court. The layup hit too strong off the backboard, caroming off the front of the rim.

Tobey made two foul shots at the other end to give Virginia a four-point lead with seven seconds remaining. Anthony Barber's all-but-uncontested layup for the Wolfpack made it a two-point game again, but there were only two seconds left.

Brogdon hit two free throws for the final margin.

Virginia and its top-ranked defense held N.C. State to 33.3 percent shooting, though the Wolfpack led by as much as six points.

The Cavaliers shot just 37.3 percent and didn't lead by more than five, which came late in the game.

They were coming off wins over nationally ranked North Carolina and Louisville last week following their 69-63 loss to Duke. They handed the Wolfpack their fifth loss in six games.
