WVU hands Oklahoma State 3rd straight loss

Feb 21, 2015 - 11:02 PM Stillwater, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - Juwan Staten had 22 points with seven assists, Gary Browne scored 18 while sinking 9-of-12 free throws and No. 23 West Virginia topped 22nd-ranked Oklahoma State 73-63 on Saturday.

Devin Williams posted nine points and 12 rebounds for the Mountaineers (21-6, 9-5 Big 12), who have won three of their last four games.

Le'Bryan Nash led four Cowboys in double figures with 12 points. Anthony Hickey and Michael Cobbins finished with 11 points apiece in the third straight loss for Oklahoma State (17-10, 7-8).

West Virginia got off to a slow start, missing eight of its first nine shots while falling behind 13-4. The Mountaineers fought back with a 12-2 run and grabbed a 16-15 lead on a BillyDee Williams 3-pointer with 6:09 remaining in the opening half.

The teams went into the break even at 25, but West Virginia was able to build a double-digit lead seven minutes into the second half.

Daxter Miles Jr. hit consecutive 3-pointers to ignite a 13-2 run that left the Mountaineers with a 41-31 advantage.

"Dax got us going. Dax made two huge threes for us to get us going," said West Virginia coach Bob Huggins.

The Mountaineers grabbed their largest lead of the game when Browne buried a trey to make it 55-41 with 8:21 remaining

Oklahoma State trimmed its deficit to eight on a Jeff Newberry 3-pointer, but Staten hit a right-handed layup for a 65-53 West Virginia lead with 2:43 remaining.

"We're struggling in second halves right now, immensely," said Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford. "I don't know why at this point, we'll figure it out."

West Virginia beat Oklahoma State for the first time in five tries since joining the Big 12 ... The Mountaineers owned a 37-20 rebounding edge and scored 23 points off 15 Cowboys turnovers ... Phil Forte had 10 points for Oklahoma State.
