No. 2 UVA pulls away from FSU despite scare

Feb 23, 2015 - 4:57 AM Charlottesville, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Already without Justin Anderson, Virginia suffered another scare on Sunday night.

It still didn't stop the Cavaliers from reaching 25 wins in consecutive seasons for the first time since the Ralph Sampson era.

Anthony Gill had 13 points and nine rebounds as No. 2 Virginia pulled away for a 51-41 victory over Florida State.

With Anderson not expected to return until next month, starting guards Malcolm Brogdon and London Perrantes left the game with 14:39 left following a scary face-to-face collision.

Perrantes lay on the court for several minutes after Brogdon walked back to the locker room with a cut over his right eye. Perrantes then exited holding a towel over his bloody nose. Brogdon returned to the contest minutes later with a bandage over his eye, while Perrantes walked back to the Virginia bench with a huge gash on his nose. He did not come back into the game.

"I saw London's nose and it didn't look like where it should be. I assume he broke his nose, but we don't know for sure yet. They will do the x-rays and look at that, but it was a hard collision," Cavaliers coach Tony Bennett said.

Florida State didn't record a basket in the final 10:34, missing its last 12 field goal attempts.

Darion Atkins posted 11 points and four steals, while Brogdon finished with 10 points for the Cavaliers (25-1, 13-1 ACC), who last tallied consecutive 25-win campaigns during the 1981-82 and 1982-83 seasons.

Xavier Rathan-Mayes was the lone double-digit scorer for the Seminoles (15-13, 7-8) with 13 points.

"Virginia came out in the second half and executed very well. They put us on our heels early in the half, and were shooting very well," FSU coach Leonard Hamilton said.

After Jarquez Smith's jumper gave FSU a 37-36 lead with 10:34 left, its first of the second half, Virginia closed the game on a 15-4 run.

The final 10 minutes was highlighted on Brogdon's spinning layup down the lane for a 45-39 UVA advantage and made 4-of-6 from the foul line in the final two- plus minutes to seal it.

Earlier, the Cavaliers raced out to a 12-4 start before FSU answered with a 12-1 surge for a 16-13 cushion.

UVA led 22-21 at the break.

Virginia has won six straight games since its lone loss to Duke ... Florida State had won five of seven coming in and was seeking its third consecutive road victory ... UVA held FSU to just 32.6 percent (15-of-46) from the floor ... The Cavaliers shot just 1-of-11 from beyond the arc.
