Georgetown holds off No. 21 Butler
Mar 4, 2015 - 6:55 AM Indianapolis, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera made two key free throws with 6.2 seconds left to help the Georgetown Hoyas hold off the 21st-ranked Butler Bulldogs, 60-54, on Tuesday.Butler pulled within 56-54 on Alex Barlow's layup with 52.1 seconds remaining. Following an empty possession for each team, Joshua Smith missed the front end of a one-and-one.
Kameron Woods came down with the defensive rebound but Smith-Rivera snuck up from behind for the steal. Smith-Rivera was fouled and made both foul shots to give Georgetown a 58-54 edge. Tre Campbell then recorded another steal before making two free throws.
Smith-Rivera ended with 16 points and seven rebounds for the Hoyas (19-9, 11-6 Big East), who have won four of five. Smith and Campbell each scored 10 points.
"I thought we responded well to them," Georgetown head coach John Thompson III said.
Woods had 15 points and 16 rebounds for the Bulldogs (21-9, 11-6), who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Barlow contributed 13 points.
Trailing 17-11, Georgetown went on a 19-4 run to take the lead. Campbell tallied eight points during the surge to make it 30-21 with 1:15 left in the first half. Andrew Chrabascz stopped the bleeding with a 3-pointer to get Butler within six at the break.
Down by 10 early in the second half, the Bulldogs used a 16-5 surge to take a 40-39 lead. Georgetown answered by scoring five straight, and the Hoyas never trailed again.
