Arizona claims Pac-12 title with rout of Oregon
Mar 15, 2015 - 5:22 AM Las Vegas, NV (SportsNetwork.com) - Arizona is back atop the Pac-12 perch.Brandon Ashley netted 20 points and the Wildcats routed Oregon 80-52 to claim the Pac-12 Tournament championship for the first time in 13 years.
The top-seeded Wildcats won their record fifth Pac-12 Tournament championship and first since 2002. They surpassed UCLA for the most conference tournament titles in Pac-12 history.
Arizona became the first team to win both Pac-12 titles since the Bruins in 2008.
Stanley Johnson supplied 14 points and T.J. McConnell added 12 points and six assists for the Wildcats (31-3), who made their case for being a possible No. 1 seed for next week's NCAA Tournament.
Pac-12 Player of the Year Joseph Young posted 19 points and four assists for second-seeded Oregon (25-9), which was 11-1 over its last 12 games coming in since being pounded 90-56 in Tucson on Jan. 28.
The Ducks raced off to a 10-4 start before Arizona quickly seized control with a 14-0 run. Gabe York and Johnson nailed 3-pointers before Johnson capped the surge with a jumper for an 18-10 advantage midway through the opening half.
A 10-0 burst later in the frame staked the Wildcats to a 32-17 cushion and they were up 36-21 heading into the break.
Arizona cruised to the easy win over the final 20 minutes, leading by as many as 31.
Game Notes
Arizona lost to UCLA 75-71 in the Pac-12 title game a year ago ... The Wildcats shot 62.5 percent (15-of-24) from the floor in the second half ... Ashley was 6-of-8 from the floor.
