NC State assistant Moxley moving to support role after year
Mar 6, 2016 - 7:35 PM RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) North Carolina State assistant coach Rob Moxley will become the team's director of player personnel after the season. The school announced the change Sunday.
Moxley has been an assistant through head coach Mark Gottfried's five-year tenure. The change comes roughly 10 months after Moxley had a life-threatening health scare that left him hospitalized for several days.
The new role will have Moxley, known as a tireless recruiter, assist in personnel development and on-campus recruiting activities as well as administrative duties.
In a statement, Gottfried said Moxley's experience ''will continue to be a strength for us as he helps us find new ways to improve our team in all areas.''
The position was previously held by former Wolfpack player Dereck Whittenburg, who is now as associate athletics director.
The 47-year-old Moxley spoke about last May's health scare in September, saying the last thing he remembered was struggling to walk down the stairs in his home and then waking up in a hospital after his wife called 911. He said he had complications from diabetes that ultimately led him to go into cardiac arrest in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, as well as having ''a few strokes.''
Moxley was on medical leave for a time, and said he had foggy vision for about two months afterward in a difficult recovery before returning to the recruiting trail by late July.
N.C. State (15-16, 5-13 Atlantic Coast Conference) faces Wake Forest in Tuesday's first round of the ACC Tournament. The Wolfpack had made the past four NCAA Tournaments.
''During the last five years we have worked hard to re-establish N.C. State men's basketball on the national stage, and I look forward to continuing help our program achieve all of our goals in my new position,'' Moxley said in a statement.
No one has shouted yet.
