Top 25 roundup: No. 2 Arizona suffers third straight loss

Nov 25, 2017 - 6:36 AM Senior guard Dakota Mathias had a game-high 24 points to lead four Purdue players in double figures to help the No. 18 Boilermakers to an 89-64 win over slumping No. 2 Arizona on Friday in the seventh-place in the Battle 4 Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas.

Carson Edwards added 22 points, Vince Edwards had 17 and Isaac Haas had 12 points for Purdue (5-2).

Purdue avoided its first three-game losing streak since Dec. 13-22, 2014, and Arizona (3-3) suffered its first three-game losing streak since Feb. 13-25, 2010 in Sean Miller's first season as Arizona's head coach.

Arizona freshman Deandre Ayton had 22 points and eight rebounds, but he fouled out with 4:32 left.



No. 1 Duke 85, Texas 78 (OT)

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Marvin Bagley III Bagley finished with a double-double of 34 points, nine of which came in overtime, and 14 rebounds as Duke defeated Texas in the second round of the Phil Knight 80 Invitational.

Down by 13 with 7:37 to play, Duke staged a massive comeback to force overtime.

Bagley scored the first point of overtime and Duke never trailed again. Grayson Allen added 12 points and five assists before fouling out with 2:00 left to play in regulation.

Texas was led by Dylan Osetkowski as he finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists.



No. 3 Kansas 102, Oakland 59

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Kansas rang up triple digits for the second straight game, rolling past Oakland in its second HoopHall Miami campus game.

The Jayhawks' inside duo of sophomores Udoka Azubuike and Mitch Lightfoot dominated inside for 32 points and 18 rebounds as Kansas improved to 5-0 in front of a sellout crowd in Allen Fieldhouse.

Azubuike, the nation's leading field goal shooter, finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds in just 20 minutes, while Lightfoot scored 11 points and added eight rebounds.



No. 5 Villanova 64, Northern Iowa 50

Villanova guards Jalen Brunson and Mikal Bridges combined for 34 points in the win over Northern Iowa in the championship game Battle 4 Atlantis at Paradise Island, Bahamas.

Bridges scored 18 points while making 8 of 14 shots from the field. He also tallied seven rebounds. Brunson had 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. He had four assists and two steals.

Northern Iowa (5-2) was led by Juwan McCloud's 13 points. Bennett Koch has 10 points and 12 rebounds and Tywhon Pickford finished with nine points and 10 rebounds.



No. 9 North Carolina 87, Arkansas 68

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Luke Maye had 28 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Tar Heels (5-0) to a second-round win of the "Victory" bracket of the Phil Knight 80 Invitational.

Kenny Williams and Joel Berry II led a strong performance by the North Carolina backcourt, combining for 32 points and 10 rebounds.

Jaylen Barford scored 21 points for Arkansas (4-1). Daryl Macon, who scored 27 points in yesterday's win over Oklahoma, was held to seven points.

A 10-0 Arkansas late in the second half cut the deficit to 6, 74-68, with 3:32 to play. North Caroline responded with its own 11-0 run in which Theo Pinson threw down a massive dunk in traffic.



No. 14 Minnesota 69, Massachusetts 51

Jordan Murphy's 16-point, 11-rebound double-double led Minnesota to a blowout win in the semifinals of the Barclays Center Classic at Steinberg Wellness Center in New York City.

Amir Coffey added 10 points for the Golden Gophers (6-0), which never trailed and led by as many as 26 points early in the second half.

Luwane Pipkins scored 16 points on 6-of-17 shooting for the Minutemen (3-2), who have just eight scholarship players.



Arizona State 102, No. 15 Xavier 86

Senior guard Tra Holder's career-high 40 points and a 58-point second-half outburst powered Arizona State to the upset in the championship game of the Las Vegas Invitational.

Holder set a career mark of 35 points just five days ago, but shattered that with a shooting performance of 14 of 22 and 5 of 8 from 3-point range.

Arizona limited Xavier star Trevon Bluiett to 11 points.



No. 16 Texas A&M 81, Pepperdine 65

DJ Hogg scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds leading Texas A&M to a win over Pepperdine at Reed Arena in College Station, Texas.

Junior center Tyler Davis finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, and senior guard Duane Wilson added 15 points for the Aggies, who improved to 5-0.

Sophomore forward Kameron Edwards led Pepperdine (2-4) with 20 points and nine rebounds.



No. 19 Louisville 84, St. Francis (Pa.) 72

Louisville (4-0) was led by junior forward Ray Spalding's 19 points and 13 rebounds as it never trailed against St. Francis.

The Red Flash (2-3) were led by 25 points from Keith Braxton, who was 10 of 18 from the floor with 11 rebounds.

The Red Flash cut the Cardinals' lead to single digits with just over five minutes left, but that was as close as they could get.



No. 20 Seton Hall 72, Vanderbilt 59

Desi Rodriguez scored 27 points to lead Seton Hall in a NIT Season Tip-Off consolation game at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Angel Delgado added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Pirates (5-1), who bounced back from a tough loss to Rhode Island on Thursday.

Senior forward Jeff Roberson had 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Commodores (2-4), who have lost three in a row.



Washington State 84, No. 21 Saint Mary's 79

Washington State guard Malachi Flynn scored a game-high 26 points, and the Cougars held off a late Saint Mary's rally to score the upset in the semifinals of the Wooden Legacy tournament in Fullerton, Calif.

Saint Mary's scored nine straight points to get within 80-77 with 48 seconds left, but the Cougars made two layups in the final 18 seconds to seal the win.

The Cougars (5-0) advance to Sunday's title game against Georgia or San Diego State.

Emmett Naar led the Gaels (5-1) with 17 points and seven assists.



No. 23 West Virginia 83, Central Florida 45

Reserve guard Beetle Bolden scored 17 points and West Virginia held Central Florida to 24.5-percent shooting during the blowout at the AdvoCare Invitational in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Point guard Jevon Carter had 16 points, five assists and five steals for the Mountaineers (5-1), who will face Missouri in Sunday's championship.

Tacko Fall had 11 points and eight rebounds for UCF (4-1), which committed 27 turnovers and made only 12 of 49 shots.



No. 25 Alabama 71, BYU 59

John Petty scored 16 points as Alabama rolled to victory over Brigham Young in the Barclay's Center Classic on Friday afternoon in Brooklyn.

Donta Hall added 14 points and nine rebounds as the Crimson Tide remain unbeaten on the year at 5-0. The freshman Petty also swiped a pair of steals and was 4 of 7 from 3-point range.
