Murray State Racers Preview

There always seems to be one mid-major team that is incredible during the year but has an uncertain NCAA Tournament outlook. Murray State might be an exception, because while the Racers are a high performing mid-major, there should be no doubts about this team’s ability.

This squad is incredibly well-rounded. K.J. Williams leads the 37th-ranked offense, scoring from inside and rebounding at a high clip with his 6-10, 245-pound frame. When they aren’t finding looks down low, they can always let Tevin Brown or Justice Hill shoot from downtown. Both are capable of catching fire.

Murray State lost only two games all season – to East Tennessee State in November and Auburn in December. In their ETSU loss, the Racers shot 1-of-16 from beyond the arc. In their road loss to Auburn, they struggled from inside. Murray State has struggled against some teams but still found ways to win. This team has a good chance to turn some heads in the tournament and make waves.

San Francisco Dons Preview

San Francisco has made it back to the tournament for the first time since 1998. The Dons quietly put together a solid season and could be a sleeper in this tournament. Todd Golden’s squad seems to be underseeded, considering that they rank in the top 25 according to KenPom, Haslametrics, and Bart Torvik.

Considering that a third of this team’s losses came against Gonzaga, you have to give the Dons credit for the resume they possess. They do have one really bad loss to Grand Canyon, but they hold wins over top-50 squads such as UAB, BYU (twice), and Davidson. Furthermore, every loss they had against a team not named Gonzaga was by less than six points.

Golden’s team boasts a top-10 3pt% defense and scores a lot of points from beyond the arc. Their size translates into effective rebounding, and they have performed quite well away from home.

Their biggest question right now is the health of their big man, Yauhen Massalski. The 6-9 Massalski missed the WCC semifinal against Gonzaga, so monitor his health. If the Belarusian star can’t play, it would seriously cap the ceiling of how far San Francisco can go.

Rapid Prediction for Murray State Racers vs. San Francisco Dons

This is a fascinating matchup between two mid-major schools that were rewarded for outstanding seasons. The selection committee gave Murray State a lot of respect with a No. 7 seed, rewarding them for a 30-2 season and 18-0 conference record. The Racers have won 20 consecutive games entering the tournament, and are led by OVC Player of the Year, K.J. Williams (18.2 pts, 8.6 rebounds). San Francisco has one of the best backcourts in the West Coast Conference, as Jamaree Bouyea and Khalil Shabazz combine for over 30 points per game. As explosive as the Dons are offensively, they are also a stout defensive team, ranking 19th in adjusted defensive efficiency (per KenPom), and allowing opponents to shoot 28.9% from three-point range (ninth best in the country).
