BACK TO JAMAICA

Georgetown doesn’t go to Jamaica very often but when they do, they play Loyola Marymount. When coach Patrick Ewing took his team back to his native land four years ago they got off to a bad start, scoring just 52 points in a loss to the Lions who were then coached by former NBA coach Mike Dunlap.

Dunlap is no longer in charge and he’s been replaced by Stan Johnson, who has some experience coaching against Ewing’s Hoyas when he was an assistant at Marquette.

Cam Shelton and Keli Leaupepe lead Loyola Marymount in scoring so far with 17 and 14 ppg respectively. Leaupepe, an undersized four, has improved his stroke from deep this season - hitting on 7 of his 13 attempts so far. LMU’s top rebounder has a familiar sounding name to older Hoya fans - Michael Graham - who brings in seven per game.

Wining this game will be important for Georgetown to (1) bounce back from a poor performance against Northwestern and (2) it gives them a great shot at getting Wake Forest on Sunday.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR

  1. Will the effort improve and will Ewing sit guys who aren’t giving that effort? Ewing said post game after Northwestern that he was disappointed in his team’s effort yet he stuck with some of his guys for big minutes who were clearly struggling.
  2. Can Georgetown limit open 3s from the Lions? This will be the difference all season long and today is no difference. LMU has three players - Cam Shelton, Just Ahrens and Chance Stephens - all taking more than five 3s per contest.
  3. Using the Bench. This kind of goes well with the first point above. Wayne Bristol and Jordan Riley have seen up and down minutes through three games while the team still comes together. Another reserve, Denver Anglin, came in with a reputation as one the of the best shooters in the country and so far hasn’t been able to really get on the court.

You know the drill. Go ahead and leave your comments below!
