In the second installment of the Cardiac Catch-Up, I’ll catch you up on the happenings in all Pittsburgh Panther non-revenue sports over the last week. With the postseason continuing in men’s and women’s soccer, an edition of the city game, and a top-ten volleyball matchup all happening in the last few days, it’s been an eventful week to be a Panther.

MEN’S SOCCER:

Starting with the most successful group of the past week, Pitt Men’s soccer has booked their ticket to the final sixteen of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament after victories over Cleveland State (2-1) and sixteenth-ranked Akron (3-0). After ruining the dreams of every soccer fan in Ohio, the Panthers have a tough task as they travel to first-ranked Kentucky with a trip to the Elite Eight on the line. If you’re a Panther fan who’s recently found some love for soccer after watching the U.S Men’s National Team in the World Cup, tune in Sunday the 27th for this Sweet Sixteen matchup.

WOMEN’S SOCCER:

Pitt Women’s Soccer concluded their magical season this week, advancing to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in program history before suffering an 0-3 to defending champions and current number one team in the nation Florida State. Before that Pitt had beaten Georgetown 2-1 in the second round of the tournament. This season marks the best result the Panthers women’s soccer program has ever had and is a huge bright spot for the future.

VOLLEYBALL:

The seventh-ranked Panthers were in action only once this week, falling in three sets to ACC foe Louisville. This loss ends the Panthers 15 match-winning streak in conference play and bumps them to 25-3 (15-1 in ACC) on the year. The match had no impact on Pitt’s ranking, as they remained seventh in the country in this week’s edition of the AVCA poll. Coming up on the schedule is a match with 13th-ranked Georgia Tech in which the Panthers are attempting to set the university attendance record for a volleyball match. Make sure you’re there and pack the Pete this Wednesday at 5 PM!

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL:

The women’s edition of the City Game took place this week, with the Panthers emerging as victors by a score of 61-45 over Duquesne. F Liatu King was dominant, setting her career high with 25 points to lead all scorers. Both teams entered the game unbeaten but with Pitt winning their record sits at 4-0, while Duquesne fell to 3-1. The Panthers now head down to Fort Myers, FL for a multi-team invitational over the Thanksgiving weekend which will see them face off against Towson, DePaul, and Maryland.

OTHER SPORTS:

Also in action this week was Pitt Wrestling as well as Pitt Swimming. Wrestling went 1-1 with a loss to Maryland and a win over Lehigh. Swimming defeated George Washington University in their lone contest of the week.
