Today’s Best College Basketball Picks
Here are my best picks for Sunday.
Rutgers at Iowa
For the most exciting game of the slate, you have two Big Ten teams with tournament hopes taking on each other in Iowa City.
This game comes down to Iowa’s offense against Rutgers’ defense. The top-10-ranked Iowa offense is incredibly effective at taking care of the ball. Iowa spreads the ball around well, scoring from anywhere on the court. Even if they miss, they rank second in second-chance conversion percentage.
Rutgers’ defense is a tough force to be reckoned with. They force turnovers on nearly a quarter of opponents’ possessions and make it quite difficult for teams to score down low.
The Scarlet Knights 122nd ranked offense isn’t great but they are going up against the 122nd-ranked defense. Rutgers’ ability to rebound the ball and score from inside makes me think they can keep this close. Overtime anyone?
Play: Rutgers +3.5
Michigan at Penn State
There are some solid Big Ten matchups tonight and Michigan at Penn State is another among teams on the outside looking in. This is a big game for both teams’ tournament hopes.
Michigan is one of the most inconsistent teams in the nation, ranking 357th in the consistency metric. The Wolverines take care of the ball but their offense sometimes doesn’t click.
Penn State shoots a ridiculous amount of threes, actually ranking 356th in the proximity metric. Over 43 percent of their points come from beyond the arc, ranking fourth highest in the nation. They take care of the ball better than Michigan and rank 20th in the nation at shooting.
If Penn State is off, this could get ugly. There are a lot of outcomes for this game but I trust Penn State’s ability to score since they should get a shot off nearly every possession.
Play: Penn State -3.5
Other Plays:
- Cleveland State -17.5
- UNC Greensboro +1.5
- Robert Morris -2.5
- Saint Joseph’s +7.5
- St. John’s -10.5
- Youngstown St. -8.5
