Rutgers vs. Indiana ML

Both Rutgers and Indiana made statements over the weekend. The Scarlet Knights took over Madison Square Garden and showed they could be the NYC presence that the Big Ten hoped they would be, while Indiana took down No. 1 Purdue at Assembly Hall. The fact that the Hoosiers were favored against the top-ranked team, a Boilermakers team that remained No. 1 in the AP poll despite the loss, is validation that Indiana is a force to be reckoned with on its home floor.

Though Rutgers slugged out a big victory over Michigan State at Madison Square Garden over the weekend, it paid a high price in the process. Forward Mawot Mag went down with a knee injury with 6:25 remaining in the first half and did not return. Mag had scored seven of the team’s first 13 points (was 3-of-4 from the field) and had made 10 of his previous 12 shots in two games against Iowa and Minnesota. Mag entered Saturday’s matchup averaging a career-high in minutes (25.4), scoring (7.9 points), rebounds (5.4), and assists (1.2). However, his absence leaves a big void when facing a Hoosiers squad in one of the Big Ten’s most challenging environments.

The home team is 6-2 ATS in the previous eight meetings between these teams, and we expect that to result in a comfortable Hoosiers victory tonight.

Bet: Indiana ML (-190 at DraftKings)

St. John’s vs. Butler O/U

Recent trends suggest the Under is the right side in this matchup, as it has cashed in 10 of Butler’s last 13 games, and the Bulldogs have averaged just 53.4 points during a five-game losing streak. However, one remedy for fixing a poor offense is facing a St. John’s team that has allowed 180 points in the last two games and 104 points to Creighton two weeks ago. The Bulldogs have seen the Red Storm’s second-ranked adjusted tempo in person, and we expect them to commit fewer than 20 turnovers at Hinkle Fieldhouse as they did at St. John’s. Butler should also get more out of forward Manny Bates in this matchup, whose minutes have increased in his previous three games back from injury. On the other side, the Red Storm make 35.2% of their 3-point shots in league play (fourth-best). Both teams shot 35% or better from 3-point range in the first meeting, and St. John’s averaged 1.04 points per possession.

The Over is 7-4 in the Red Storm’s last 11 games (and 5-0 in their last five road games), which is the trend we expect to prevail tonight.

Bet: St. John’s-Butler Over 144.5 (-115 at DraftKings)

Auburn vs. Texas A&M Spread

While Auburn has covered both games it has played as underdogs, it still may be stewing about the non-foul call at the end of the Tennessee game, when the referees swallowed the whistle on a 3-point attempt when they were trailing 46-43. Texas A&M should have similar success defensively as the Volunteers had, as it ranks 57th or better in effective field goal percentage and turnover percentage forced (21.3%), while Auburn is outside the top 200 in both metrics offensively.

Texas A&M has a distinct advantage on the offensive glass (37.4% offensive rebounding percentage ranks 6th nationally), as the Tigers allow the 283rd-highest percentage of offensive rebounds (31.0%). In addition, the Aggies should be living at the free throw line, as they rank fifth nationally in free throws attempted per field goal attempt, while Auburn’s defense is 200th in the same category.

Texas A&M is 11-1 at home this year and has the SEC’s best cover rate. The Aggies are 14-9 ATS and have covered eight of 12 games as home favorites, and we expect them to do so again.

Bet: Texas A&M (-110 at DraftKings)
