(2) Marquette vs. (7) Michigan State

Leg 1 – Michigan State +2.5 (-105

Marquette’s defense has improved over the last couple of weeks. But I’m still not ready to move Marquette into the Sweet 16.

The Spartans are shooting 39.4% from downtown, while Marquette has allowed teams to shoot 35.1% from three this season. Michigan State won’t take a ton of threes, but the Spartans will take them when they’re open. The Spartans have struggled to score inside the arc and usually don’t get to the foul line at a high rate. But Marquette allows teams to shoot above 50% from the field inside the arc. The Spartans no longer have to worry about guys like Zach Edey or Trayce Jackson-Davis.

Meanwhile, Marquette has only earned 26.3% of offensive rebounds and also doesn’t get to the foul line often. The Golden Eagles are terrific from inside the arc and still shoot over 35% from three. But the Spartans have held opponents to 31.6% from deep and 48.5% from inside the arc. Michigan State has the edge.

Leg 2 – Over 140.5 (-105

Neither team will earn second chances. But at the end of the day, both offenses are superior to the opposition’s defense.

Michigan State has nailed 39.4% from three and should get some quality looks from long-range in this game. On the other hand, Marquette is super efficient inside the arc, scoring 58.6% of shots from inside.

The Spartans might do better from inside, with Marquette allowing over 50% from the field. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Michigan State won the rebounding battle and added more second chances in tonight’s game.

Leg 3 – AJ Hoggard Over 12.5 Points (-106)

Hoggard is the third-leading scorer on the Spartans this season. He’s averaged 12.5 points per game, and his line is set at 12.5.

But Hoggard is the most used player on this team. He’s got a usage percentage of 27.4%. Hoggard has only played in 29 and 28 minutes over his last two games but has attempted more than 20 shots combined in those two games. He needs to be a bit more consistent from the field. Against Marquette, I’d expect Hoggard to have a big day offensively. He will be involved, adding many assists and enough points to help get his prop over.
