No. 24 TCU outlasts Utah 105-96 in 4 OTs

Feb 11, 2010 - 6:02 AM SALT LAKE CITY(AP) -- Emily Carter and Eboni Mangum each scored 25 points to help No. 24 TCU overcome a Mountain West Conference 45-point effort from Kalee Whipple and beat Utah 105-96 in four overtimes Wednesday night.

Whipple's career night included a 3-pointer as time expired at the end of the third overtime that tied the game at 90. TCU scored the first nine points of the final period to pull away for the victory.

Helena Sverrisdottir added 21 points and TK LaFleur had 19 for TCU (18-5, 8-2).

Whipple added 11 rebounds, four steals and three assists in a school-record 59 minutes for the Utes (13-8, 4-4), who played the longest game in school history.

It was the first four-overtime game in women's basketball since Elon faced Western Carolina on Feb. 11, 2008 according to STATS LLC.

Whipple hit seven 3-pointers, mostly under duress in crucial situations. "It was a great game, but when you don't get a win, it's always hard to feel good about the way you played," said Whipple, who hit seven 3-pointers.

Trailing by four with 5 seconds left in the third overtime, Whipple was fouled shooting a 3-pointer. She made the first free throw and then missed the next one. She missed the third one intentionally and the Utes got it. Freshman guard Rachel Masser threw a desperation pass to Whipple that she lobbed up with a feeble grip on the ball near the end of the scorer's table. Somehow, it swished in.

"I didn't even expect to get the ball back," Whipple said. "I didn't have time to think about it at all."

Freshman center Taryn Wicijowski had 23 points before getting into late foul trouble for Utah, while sophomore guard Janita Badon added 13 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

Wicijowski's layup with four seconds left in the second overtime tied the game at 80.

Utah had a chance to win the game in the first overtime when Halie Sawyer was fouled with one second left. She hit the first free throw to tie the game at 73 but missed the second.
