Duke clamps down on Rutgers

Dec 5, 2006 - 7:54 AM PISCATAWAY, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Rutgers has built its reputation on defense, but it learned a lesson from Duke.

Abby Waner scored 21 points to lead fifth-ranked Duke to a surprisingly easy 85-45 win over No. 17 Rutgers in the Jimmy V Classic.

The Blue Devils (7-0) held their seventh straight opponent under 50 points and below 30 percent shooting. Duke scored the first seven points and raced to a 20-5 lead as Waner and Lindsey Harding hit two 3-pointers apiece.

The Blue Devils led at halftime, 39-18, and scored the first 11 points after the break to put the game out of reach.

Harding scored 19 points and Alison Bales added 11 and eight rebounds for Duke, which shot 51 percent (31-61) from the field.

One of the few bright spots for the Scarlet Knights (2-3) was the return of Matee Ajavon, who made her season debut after recovering from surgery for a stress fracture in her leg. She scored 14 points and Epiphanny Prince added 11.

Center Kia Vaughn went 0-for-9 from the floor but grabbed 18 rebounds for Rutgers.
