DePaul holds off rally by Chicago State

Dec 30, 2006 - 11:16 PM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- DePaul got a tougher test than expected from its city rival.

Caprice Smith scored 23 points and No. 18 DePaul held off a second-half rally for a 77-71 victory over Chicago State.

A 6-1 junior forward, Smith hit 10-of-18 shots and grabbed nine rebounds as the Blue Demons built a 45-32 halftime lead and held off the Cougars (4-11), who absorbed their fifth straight defeat.

Allie Quigley added 19 points and Jenna Rubino 15 for DePaul (11-3), which rebounded from an 18-point loss at Nevada-Las Vegas on Thursday.

Zondranika Williams scored 16 points to pace four players in double figures for the Cougars. Alyssa Waldon added 16 points and both she and Williams hit four 3-pointers as Chicago State connected on 8-of-14 (57 percent) shots from the arc.
