Quaye leads Marquette to Big East semifinals

Mar 5, 2007 - 5:05 AM HARTFORD, Connecticut (Ticker) -- Christina Quaye scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds as No. 19 Marquette posted a 61-51 victory over Pittsburgh in the Big East Conference Tournament quarterfinals.

Marquette (25-5) will face Rutgers in the semifinals Monday.

The Golden Eagles trailed, 29-28, at halftime but held the Panthers to just 31 percent (8-of-26) shooting after the break.

Marquette held a 45-44 lead with seven minutes remaining but then went on a 16-4 run over the next 6 1/2 minutes.

Krystal Ellis had 15 points for the Golden Eagles, who shot 38 percent (19-of-50) from the field and recorded their third straight win.

Marcedes Walker collected 18 points and 12 rebounds and Ashleigh Braxton added 12 for Pittsburgh, which had its three-game winning streak snapped with a 31 percent (19-of-61) shooting effort.

Jania Sims had nine points and seven assists for the Panthers, who were outscored, 26-18, in the paint and committed 17 turnovers leading to 14 points for the Golden Eagles.
