Viani leads Marist to shocking upset of Ohio State

Mar 18, 2007 - 6:26 AM PALO ALTO, California (Ticker) -- Julianne Viani made sure there was an abrupt end to Jessica Davenport's career.

Viani scored 24 points and Rachele Fitz added 16 as 13th-seeded Marist posted a 67-63 upset victory over Davenport and No. 4 Ohio State in a first-round matchup in the Fresno Region.

In Monday's second-round contest, Marist will play Middle Tennessee, which owns the nation's longest winning streak at 27 games.

Sarah Smrdel scored 10 points for the Red Foxes (28-5), who notched their first NCAA Tournament win in school history.

After transferring from Rhode Island after the 2003-04 season, Viani made the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's All-Rookie team last campaign and now has led the squad to a historic win.

Viani shot 7-of-11 from the field, including 6-of-10 on 3-pointers.

Her performance shocked the Buckeyes and Big Ten Player of the Year Davenport, who scored 13 points but struggled with Marist's swarming defense in the low post - committing 11 turnovers.

Leading the Red Foxes in scoring (15.0) and rebounding (6.4) entering Saturday's contest, Fitz was 8-of-16 from the floor and grabbed five rebounds.

Ashlee Trebilcock scored 23 points for Ohio State (28-4), which outrebounded Marist, 40-22.
