Whittington, Goring lead NC State to round of 16

Mar 21, 2007 - 3:48 AM RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- NC State needed overtime to advance to the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.

Khadijah Whittington collected 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead the fourth-seeded Wolfpack to a thrilling 78-72 victory over fifth-seeded Baylor in the second round of the Fresno Region.

Gillian Goring scored the opening layup in overtime as NC State (25-9) never trailed and outscored the Bears, 13-7, during the extra session. The Wolfpack converted three free throws over the final 35 seconds to seal the victory.

NC State next will play top-seeded Connecticut on Saturday.

Goring scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Shayla Fields added 14 points for NC State, which shot 47 percent (30-of-64) and scored 25 points off 20 Baylor turnovers.

The Bears (26-8) trailed, 61-55, with just over six minutes remaining in the game but went on a 10-4 spurt with Jessica Morrow's jumper with 41 seconds left knotting the contest at 65-65. Fields missed two free throws for the Wolfpack down the stretch, pushing the game into overtime.

Bernice Mosby scored 26 points for Baylor, which shot 43 percent (29-of-63).
