Louisville takes first loss in double overtime

Jan 4, 2007 - 9:58 AM PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island (Ticker) -- Catherine Bove just would not let Louisville remain among the group of the unbeaten.

Bove scored 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Providence overcame a late collapse to shock No. 13 Louisville with a 106-94 double-overtime victory in a Big East Conference thriller.

With the setback by the Cardinals (15-1, 1-1 Big East), only four teams in Division I remain undefeated. Included in that group in defending national champion Maryland and Duke, which both posted wins on Wednesday.

Although one of Bove's five 3-pointers gave the Friars (11-4, 1-1) a 13-point lead with under six minutes remaining in regulation, the Cardinals rallied to extend the contest, tying it at 76-76 on a shot from the arc by freshman Brandie Radde as time expired.

Louisville had a chance to come away unscathed in the first overtime, but Bove forged an 84-84 deadlock in the final minute with a 3-pointer.

Chelsea Marandola scored 24 points and Kendria Holmes added 16 for Providence, which pulled away in the second extra session with an opening 11-2 spurt.

Angel McCoughtry scored 24 points and pulled down 18 rebounds but also committed seven of Louisville's 23 turnovers. Providence had just 12 giveaways.
