Fowles lifts LSU over Georgia
Jan 8, 2007 - 12:20 AM BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Ticker) -- Sylvia Fowles broke a dry spell at just the right time.Fowles hit the go-ahead basket with 53 seconds to play to rally sixth-ranked Louisiana State to a 57-55 Southeastern Conference victory over No. 15 Georgia.
A 6-6 junior center, Fowles had 20 points and 12 rebounds but had not scored in almost eight minutes until her layup put the Tigers ahead, 57-55.
Tasha Humphrey missed on a drive to the hoop with four seconds left to seal the win for LSU (15-1, 1-0 SEC).
Quianna Chaney scored 15 points and Allison Hightower 12 for the Tigers, who trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half and 53-48 with 3:52 left. Hightower's 3-pointer tied it at 53-53 and her two free throws made it 55-55, setting up Fowles' winning shot.
Christy Marshall scored 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting for Georgia (13-3, 1-1), which jumped out to an 18-4 lead.
