Vanderbilt trounces Alabama in SEC mismatch

Feb 4, 2007 - 11:07 PM NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Caroline Williams scored 17 points to lead a balanced attack as 15th-ranked Vanderbilt outclassed Alabama, 91-51, in a Southeastern Conference mismatch.

Liz Sherwood scored 13 points off the bench and Christina Wirth and Carla Thomas added 11 apiece on combined 8-of-9 shooting for the Commodores, who shot a blistering 76 percent (32-of-42) from the field.

Vanderbilt (20-4, 6-3 SEC) was coming off a one-point win over Kentucky and won its third straight game. Alabama (10-14, 0-9) remained winless in the SEC.

Williams was 5-of-8 from the field, which represented the most misses by any player on the Commodores. Sherwood was 5-of-6 and Jessica Mooney 5-of-5 for 10 points.

The Commodores shot 65 percent (11-of-17) in the first half, opening a 38-19 lead. They missed just four shots in 25 attempts after halftime, making all five 3-pointers.

Kate Mastin scored 21 points but committed 10 turnovers for Alabama, which shot 42.5 percent (17-of-40) and had 31 giveaways.
