Stanford takes out Arizona in Pac-10 quarterfinals
Mar 4, 2007 - 4:54 AM SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- Freshman Jayne Appel scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as No. 8 Stanford defeated Arizona, 65-55, in the quarterfinals of the Pacific-10 Conference tournament.Candice Wiggins had 16 points and Jillian Harmon added 11 as Stanford (26-4, 17-1 Pac-10) will play in the semifinals and look for their fourth conference tournament title in five years.
Appel made 7-of-11 shots and Brooke Smith dished out six assists as the Cardinals shot 44 percent (25-of-57) from the floor and held a 19-9 advantage in assists.
Ashley Whisonant scored 18 points and Joy Hollingsworth added 14 and nabbed six rebounds as Arizona (11-21, 4-14) shot only 35 percent (20-of-58) from the field and received only 21 combined points from their starters.
