Arizona State moves on to Pac-10 championship game
Mar 5, 2007 - 2:09 AM SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- A balanced effort gave Arizona State a chance for a title.Kirsten Thompson scored 14 points and Emily Westerberg added 12 for the seventh-ranked Sun Devils in a 60-53 victory over No. 24 California in the semifinals of the Pac-10 Conference Tournament.
Picking up its ninth straight win, Arizona State (28-3) advanced to the title game for the third time in the tournament's six-year existence. It will face either Stanford or Southern California.
Aubree Johnson scored eight points and Jill Noe chipped in seven for the Sun Devils, who overcame 42 percent (26-of-62) shooting by forcing the Golden Bears into 22 turnovers.
Holding a 56-53 lead, Arizona State committed a turnover with 37 seconds remaining. However, Cal missed a pair of contested layups and Briann January made two free throws to give the Sun Devils a five-point cushion with 13 seconds to play.
Devanei Hampton scored 21 points and Ashley Walker added 13 for the Golden Bears, who ended up 0-of-5 on 3-pointers.
