Maddox, Temple edge Nebraska to advance in NCAAs

Mar 19, 2007 - 6:04 AM RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Fatima Maddox scored 18 points and made key free throws down the stretch as eighth seeded Temple posted a 64-61 triumph over No. 9 Nebraska in the first round of the NCAA Tournament's Greensboro Region.

In the second half, Chelsea Aubry's basket with 2:49 remaining gave the Cornhuskers a 59-55 advantage.

The Owls (25-7) rallied with a 7-0 surge to grab a 62-59 bulge with 56 seconds left to play. But Nebraska's Kelsey Griffin scored to make it an one-point contest 23 seconds later.

With 20 seconds to go, Danielle Page fouled Maddox, who stepped to the line and sank a pair of free throws to push the lead to three. The Huskers (22-10) had a chance to tie, but Kiera Hardy missed from 3-point range, ending their season.

Lady Comfort scored 15 points and Kemesha Hairston added 12 for Temple, which will face top-seeded Duke in the second round on Tuesday.

Hardy netted 23 points and Griffin chipped in 11 for the Cornhuskers, who were outscored 30-18 in points in the paint and gave up 17 second-chance points.
